Are you looking for the best cheap but chic budget hotels in Paris where you can get affordable low rates and a comfortable night's sleep in a safe neighborhood while experiencing the alluring charm and that we associate with Parisian style?

In a city known for its luxurious and expensive 5-star hotels where just one night can cost you a hefty 4-figure sum, do affordable (and by "affordable," I mean rates starting at around €100-€200) hotels that exude charm and comfort even exist in Paris?

Absolutely!  You just need to know where to look - a skill I honed during years of visiting Paris on a budget.

In this article, I share my favorite chic, charming, and cheap Paris budget hotels, including some hidden gems where I've stayed and loved the experience, several which friends highly recommend, and a few on my "future visits" list.

How to Get the Lowest Paris Hotel Rates

  • Avoid June, July, and the Christmas/New Year holidays when rates may soar; if you can, visit in August or November through mid-March (excluding the holidays) to get the very lowest rates
  • Book as far ahead as possible
  • If you're sure of your dates, book a non-refundable rate (consider using travel insurance to cover specific risks)
  • Reserve the hotel's smallest room to get the cheapest rates
  • For more amenities including 4-star hotels, consider staying in a "double digit" Paris arrondissement
  • Skip the hotel breakfast; pick up your coffee and croissant at a nearby bakery

Best Budget-Friendly Hotels in Central Paris: Louvre, Saint Germain, Latin Quarter, & More

These charming, highly-rated hotels (plus a couple of chic aparthotels) in the citiy's central arrondissements (1-9) are my recommendations for where to stay in Paris on a budget when you want to be close to the most famous attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Louvre Museum.

This is the most popular part of Paris with tourists and business visitors, so hotel rates reflect that - which is why 2-star and 3-star hotels are typically the sweet spot for finding bargains at around $200, although in low season, you'll find rates closer to $100 at some of them..

Hôtel Montpensier  ★★

12 Rue de Richelieu, 1st arrondissement

Hotel Montpensier's 40 guest rooms (which include triples and quadruples) feature simple but chic decor, with classical touches. All rooms have private bathrooms, wifi, and air conditioning in spring and summer.

There's also a tiny, quaint elevator that holds one or two people.

Palais Royal Garden, about a 2-minute walk from Hotel Montpensier

The hotel's location can't be beat when you want to be just a few minutes' walk from the Louvre, Palais Royal Garden, and Tuileries Garden.

Palais Garnier (the Paris Opera House) and two of the city's luxury department stores (grands magasins), Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, are about a 10-minutes on foot, and stations for several metro lines are nearby.

Hotel Opéra Matignon

36 Rue Rue Sainte-Anne, 1st arrondissement

Stay at Hotel Opéra Maintenon and you'll be in the heart of one of Paris's trendiest culinary scenes where dozens of French and Asian bistros and cafes attract crowds of enthusiastic fans.

The hotel has 19 guestrooms and occupies an elegant 17th century mansion, air conditioning, free wifi, a safe at the front desk (with 24x7 staffing), and an accessible ground floor guestroom.

A small elevator services floors 1-4, which means you'll need to walk up the stairs from the ground floor to the first floor - ie, 2nd floor if you're North American - but the staff will help you if needed.

Best of all, Hotel Opéra Matignon's central location means you're close to the Louvre, the Paris Opera House, and Palais Royal Garden, plus one of the city's loveliest 19th century covered shopping passages, Passage Choiseul.

The recently renovated 3-star Hotel Bonne Nouvelle is located on a quiet semi-pedestrian street in the Montorgueil/Sentier neighborhood, once known as the epicenter of Paris's wholesale fashion district and now a major destination for foodies.

One of the public areas at Hotel Roubaix (the decorator must have had a lot of fun!)

6 Rue de Greneta, Upper Marais, 3rd arrondissement

With 54 guestrooms, Hôtel de Roubaix features decor ranging from quirky to quaint, charming to fun that somehow proclaims, "you're in Paris!"  It's the total opposite of a corporate brand or chain hotel where all the rooms have identical appearances.

Although I haven't had a chance to book here myself, a couple of my friends stayed there recently and loved everything about it, including its piano, shelves full of books, and puzzles for guests to enjoy.  They called the vibe "homey and comfortable."

7 Rue Lacépède, Latin Quarter/Jardin des Plantes, 5th arrondissement

Due to the Latin Quarter's great popularity with visitors, hotel rates here can be fairly elevated.  That's why it's such a surprise to include the new and trés chic Le Jardin de Verre aparthotel in an article about budget-friendly places to stay in Paris.

Located just steps away from the beautiful Jardin des Plantes, Le Jardin was created from an 18th century hôtel particulier (townhouse) combined with a 19th century factory and offers 135 serviced apartments of various sizes, each with its own fully-equipped kitchenette.

As you can see in the above photo, the apartments feature sumptuous decor plus access to a whole suite of amenities:  a yoga room, fitness room, co-working space, a glass-enclosed atrium restaurant, outdoor courtyard, and even laundry facilities.

Dahlias blooming in the Jardin des Plantes

With the twice-weekly farmers' market at Place Monge and the Rue Mouffetard market street nearby, you'll have easy access to delicious treats to store in your refrigerator - not to mention the neighborhood's renowned bakeries and cheese shops.  And all of the Latin Quarter's other attractions as well as the Seine River are just a short walk away.

Best of all, rates for the smaller units are surprisingly affordable, especially if you avoid the busiest times (May, June, July, the Christmas-New Year holidays, and Easter weekend).

And during the least-expensive times (November, early December, and January through most of April, even the largest and poshest accommodations become budget-friendly.

I haven't stayed here yet - but Le Jardin de Verre is on my list for a future visit.

With a wonderful location on a quiet side street in the heart of Saint-Germain, boutique Hôtel Clément features 28 charming guest rooms and suites with comfortable beds, air conditioning, an elevator, in-room safes, and budget-friendly rates - a true hidden gem in this upscale neighborhood where high rates prevail.

During a recent stay here with my husband and older daughter, we loved the lavish breakfast with many choices and gourmet products - definitely above and beyond what's on offer at typical 2-star hotels.

For an immersive dive into the world of street artist Banksy, consider staying in the 2-star The Walled Off Hotel Paris, a reproduction of its Bethlehem counterpart and like the artist, somewhat subversive and quirky.

The hotel's public spaces such as the lobby are a part of Paris's permanent Banksy exhibition, available for ticketed visitors to explore.

In addition to the experience of staying in a Banksy-themed guestroom, you'll also enjoy budget-friendly rates.  No-frills 1-person singles and no in-room toilets or showers offer cheap rates well under 100€, and the larger rooms with en-suite bathrooms also fall into the very affordable price range.

The hotel provides safes in each of its 28 guest rooms, an elevator, and free wifi, but does not have air conditioning.  Sound proofing reportedly could be better. Near the hotel, you'll find a lively (and often noisy) nightlife scene and the pedestrian-only Rue Cadet food street.  Pigalle and Montmartre are a 10-15 minute walk.

Somewhat surprisingly, considering what you get as well as the popular location, rates for studios fall into the budget-friendly category at around €200/night during all but the most popular months, and a discount is offered for stays of at least a week.

If you're visiting with your young children, Villa SoPi will loan you on request all the essentials you'll need for your stay, including a crib, baby bathtub, changing mat, high chair, and stroller. Onsite laundry facilities are also available.

Located in the trendy (and foodie-friendly) South Pigalle (SoPi) neighborhood about two blocks from the foot of Montmartre, Villa SoPi's location puts you close to two wonderful market streets, Rue des Martyrs and Rue Cadet.

One of Paris's best coffee bars, KB Roasters, is only two blocks away, and the neighborhood is packed with wonderful small cafes, bistros, and shops.

43 Rue de Croulebarbe, 13th arrondissement

Hotel Le Vert Galant, located across from the 13th arrondissement's bucolic Square René le Gall garden, feels like a small French country inn - a true hidden gem tucked away on a quiet street just 3 blocks from the large Place d'Italie shopping mall and metro station where three lines converge to give you fast and easy access to the rest of Paris.

All guestrooms in this family-owned hotel look out onto the garden, the perfect spot for your morning coffee and breakfast, or perhaps an evening drink.

Although room sizes range from small to smaller and decor is simple, the beds are quite comfortable and a few rooms even have small kitchenettes.  If you need more space, you can book connecting rooms to make a suite.

All rooms have private bathrooms and in-room safes, but no air conditioning.  With only two floors, the hotel does not have an elevator - not really an issue, as you can book a ground-floor room.

Except for the very busiest of times, the budget-friendly rates at this charming boutique hotel fall well under a €200/night.  Not surprisingly, Le Vert Galant has a loyal base of return guests, so book as soon as you know your dates.

The hotel owners also own and run the onsite restaurant, Auberge Etchegorry, which specializes in homemade cuisine from Southwestern France.  French novelist Victor Hugo and poet-songwriter Jean de Béranger used to hang out here around 200 years ago, which is why the historic signs for L'Restaurant Basque and Cabaret Madame Gregoire remain on the building.

The hotel is located in the Gobelins neighborhood and is near the famous Gobelins tapistry factory (Manufacture des Gobelins) where you can take a tour.  The Latin Quarter is next door - in fact, it's popular Rue Mouffetard street market is less than 5 minutes away and Jardin des Plantes, with its botanical garden, small zoo, and Museum of Natural History is not much farther.

The Seine River is about 15-20 minutes on foot from the hotel.  To get there, walk down Boulevard Vincent Auriol where you can see some of the city's best giant street art murals along the way.
